Weather Briefings and Routing
So much to learn here, endless.
But I've found this to be one of the aspects of the sport that I really love.
I studied David Houghton's book, Wind Strategy, until I had a fundamental understanding of the material. And studying more technically, from there.

In my experience, of course just racing in general is a great teacher, lining up some new offshore race plans to learn more. In my free time for fun I've also studied endless hours of weather maps as a surfer/kitesurfer/sailor in New Zealand. (NZ is a far more multi-varied and geographically nuanced set up than SoCal, monitoring and predicting the trajectory of the Antarctic lows towards the island.) Mainly as the surfer, forecasting waves from all the different set ups and patterns the country has, but also keenly and inseparably studying the wind for the kiting potential. The sailing forecast, I normally only needed to know a day in advance, so was usually automatically tuned in. But also have some great experience with longer deliveries, races and cruising.
Coaching 420 Midwinters 2025
I have a weather strategy process I go through before I race. Jensen Beach is a great venue with a lot to learn from. Coaching Mids 2025 I experimented with a new coaching approach with full written weather strategy briefings and video review. I'll be refining this process to be more succinct for highest quality.
